Baby Registry Essentials: What You Actually Need

Baby Registry Essentials: What You Actually Need: Skip the fluff—just the basics for baby’s first year.

Registering for baby gear can be overwhelming. Between adorable onesies, wipe warmers, and vibrating bassinets, it’s easy to lose track of what you actually need to care for a newborn. Here’s a refreshing truth: you don’t need much. In fact, just a few core essentials will get you through those early months. Everything else? Nice to have, not necessary.

Let’s break it down.

1. Diapers (LOTS of them)

Whether you go with disposable or cloth, diapers are at the very top of the list. You’ll go through a lot—think 8 to 12 per day at the beginning. Pro Tip: Register for multiple sizes (not just newborn). Babies grow quickly!

2. A Safe Car Seat (Non-Negotiable)

If you're planning to take your baby anywhere in a vehicle—including home from the hospital—you need an approved infant car seat. It's not just essential, it's legally required in most places.

Look for:

  • A rear-facing, infant-specific seat
  • High safety ratings
  • Ease of installation (some come with a base that stays in the car)

3. A Place for Baby to Sleep

While not strictly necessary if you plan to co-sleep safely, most parents prefer to have a designated sleeping space like a crib, bassinet, or portable play yard. Choose something safe, with a firm mattress and a fitted sheet. No pillows, bumpers, or blankets needed—just a safe, flat surface.

4. Weather-Appropriate Clothing

Babies don’t need a walk-in closet. A few sleepers, onesies, and a couple of hats will go a long way. Just make sure they’re seasonally appropriate and easy to get on and off for all those diaper changes.

The last thing that I would add to this list is knowing your postpartum village - your partner, paediatrician, lactation consultant, grandparents (to help bring you meals and maybe to do a few loads of laundry ...).

Everything Else? Optional.

Yes, even:

  • Baby monitors
  • Swings and bouncers
  • Pacifiers and toys
  • Fancy strollers
  • Changing tables
  • Special towels and washcloths
  • Pumps (I would recommend waiting to see if you even require one, or at the very least, purchase close to your due date and then don't open unless you know for sure that you need to use one)

They’re great if you want them or if someone gifts them, but you can totally get by without.

Bottom Line

The baby industry thrives on selling you more than you need. But in reality, your baby needs love, food, cleanliness, and safety. The rest? You’ll figure it out as you go.

Start with the true essentials: diapers, car seat, a safe sleep space. Everything else can wait—or may not even be necessary.
