Breastfeeding & Lactation Consultant FAQ – Ontario

1. Is a lactation consultant covered under OHIP?
Lactation consultant services are not typically covered by OHIP unless support is provided in a hospital or by a physician. Private consultants charge a fee.

2. How much is a lactation consultant in Ontario?
Costs range from $100–$300+ per session, depending on location (in a clinic vs in your home) and length of the appointment.

3. When should you start seeing a lactation consultant?
You can see a lactation consultant any time — during pregnancy to prepare, or after birth if you have concerns with feeding, latching, milk supply, or pain.

4. Will insurance pay for a lactation consultant?
Some private insurance plans may cover all or part of the cost. Check with your provider as many insurance providers are now providing coverage! You can always check with your insurance policy before reaching out!

5. Can stress affect my milk supply?
Yes. High stress can interfere with let-down and reduce milk supply over time.

6. How do I get help with breastfeeding in Ontario?
You can speak to your doctor, public health nurse, or reach out to a private lactation consultant. Many communities also offer free breastfeeding clinics and peer support groups!

7. Can a lactation consultant help with low milk supply?
Absolutely. They can assess the cause and help develop a plan to increase your supply.

8. Why are lactation consultants so expensive?
Fees reflect their specialized training, time-intensive care, and often home visits. Many work independently without government funding. More on this, in another future post!

9. How long is a typical lactation consultant appointment?
Initial visits are usually 60–90 minutes. Follow-ups may be shorter, around 30–60 minutes.
